City Attractions
- Wangfujing
- Beijing’s Wangfujing Avenue, the “walking street”, is lined with department stores and shops selling everything from high fashions to high grade tea. Running parallel are Dong Dan Bei and Dong Si Nan Avenues, with a concentration of small restaurants, shops and boutiques.
- Wal-Mart Supermarket
- The nearest branch of this huge retail facility is in the Beijing Wanda Plaza in Jianguo Road.
- Shin Kong Place (Shopping center)
- A well-designed six-storey mall containing 100 international designer brands, restaurants and cafe. It is part of a larger development that includes the Ritz-Carlton Beijing and JW Marriott hotels. 87 Jianguo Lu (northeast of Dawang Bridge), Beijing. Phone 6530-5888.
- Silk Street or Silk Market (Guomao station, Line1)
- A shopping center accommodating over 1,700 retail vendors and replacing the old alley-based Xiushui Market. In addition to selling fashion apparels and accessories, the new Silk Street has introduced traditional handicrafts, antiques, calligraphy, carpets, table cloths, bed coverings, paintings, dresses, toys, electronic gadgets, trinkets, and jewelry.
- Chao Yang Park
- At 320 hectares, the largest park in the city. There are two outdoor swimming pools, a bungee jumping tower over one of the lakes, boating, sports areas, a wetland area, funfair and musical fountains. The park also plays host to many outdoor music events. Night time entertainment takes place at the west and east gates of the park.
- Tian An Men Square
- The most famous and visited spot in Bejing and, once you are a resident, a good place to take your visitors, especially for the early morning flag raising ceremony. It is not far from home.
- St Joseph’s Cathedral (East Church), Beijing Wangfung Dajie
- This large city centre Catholic church is quite an elegant sight in itself. Now fully restored to worship as well as architecturally, it celebrates masses in English (and one a week in Latin) as well as Chinese.
- CCTV Headquarters
- This extraordinary piece of architecture, which is just opening as the TV headquarters, is worth just looking at. Locals call it ‘The Pants’. Facilities available to the public within are expected.
